Two Major Disadvantages of Working at Home
Are you thinking of quitting your day job and considering to shift to work online? Better know what you may be getting yourself into before you dive in. Know the main disadvantages of working online to help you decide.
Two Good Reasons Not to Work Online
We are sure you have all heard about working online and how liberating and fun it can be. So many things have already been said about the advantages of working online and how great it is that people may be getting an unbalanced and distorted idea about it. True that it can be a good move for many people to shift to work online but it may not be good for everyone. Like anything else in this world, it’s not all fun and games.
It's also important to know the downsides of working online so you can make a better decision if online work is for you. We can list down a lot of disadvantages but we believe we can trim it down to two reasons:
1. You Don't Want to Be Your Own Boss
Ironically, this is the main advantage of working online but it can also backfire. It depends mainly on how you work as a freelancer. The best online works are mostly freelance or project-based. To work in such an environment, you need to be a self-starter and a self-motivated person. The flexibility and independence you get from online work also mean that no one will push you to start working and to finish deadlines -- but yourself. For people who don't have self-discipline and need constant external motivation, this may not work for you if you need routine schedules to keep you motivated. There are people who need the daily routine of going to work at a given time, who need supervision to accomplish their work and to stay motivated.
2. You Don't Want to Run Your Own Company
As a freelance online worker, you are also an independent contractor of sorts. This means that you are solely responsible for managing your career, which includes your operational requirements, such as managing and recording your income and expenses as well as filing and paying for your taxes. You will either need to figure out to do all of these or hire someone (probably another freelance worker like you) to do it for you. This can be a major pain for some people and if you are not up to it, it may be better to stick to your 9 to 5 job where they will take care of most of these problems.
Working as an online freelancer also have some disadvantages. However, if you think this is the right path for your career, you may want to open an online international account for convenient transactions if you decide to bring your online freelance on a vacation abroad.
