Getting Started as a Virtual Assistant

Like any career, you need to have some experience or training to become a virtual assistant. If your present or previous job description includes functions and tasks of an assistant like organizing work and meeting schedules, writing business letters and filing documents, then you are more or less halfway there.
There are certain things you need to start with to get underway. Here are the first 4 things we think you need to start doing to get your virtual assistant career on the right track.

1. Pick Your Niche
The work of a VA can range from a variety of tasks. In fact, many choose to be what is commonly called a VA generalist. In many cases, specializing in certain tasks or industry does help you narrow down your skill set and career path. This also helps if you already have a comprehensive background in certain marketable VA specializations, such as client servicing or copywriting. It also allows you to target a broad range of clientele.

2. Invest in Yourself
Investing in yourself does not necessarily mean buying yourself high-end tools of the trade such as a laptop or a phone, although these things do help. What we are talking about here is more on getting the right training, knowledge and even certifications if this is necessary to keep yourself up to date as a VA. If you have already decided on a niche, find out what are the things you need to master to further increase your credibility. You need to do this as you advance your career to keep yourself updated.

3. Build a Web Presence
It always pays to market yourself especially if you plan to work freelance. Since you will work online, building a web presence is the best way to market yourself and your capabilities. Put up a Facebook page where you can talk about what your background is and your capabilities. Create a LinkedIn account that also gives such information. If you have the resources, you can even put up your own website.

4. Do Some Serious Marketing
After building a web presence, it may also be a good idea to do other marketing strategies. Web-based marketing and social media are just a few of the methods of promoting your VA career. There are other marketing strategies that can prove to be beneficial. Research on what you can do and focus on just a few that you are comfortable doing and that you think can help you get clients. Other marketing methods you may consider are making cold calls and e-mail blasts.

In the U.S., VAs earn an average of $16.47 per hour, but you can earn even more as you gain job experience throughout your career. Becoming a VA is worth considering if you hate 9 to 5 office jobs and you often want to travel abroad. Some VA who always travel abroad prefer to have an international account so it's easy for them to accept multi-currency payments.
